Prom is one special night of
your life where you want to look your best, here we provide
you with all the information you need to look drop dead gorgeous
on the night, to make it a night you'll never forget.
In this section, we give you all the things we think are important
to create the perfect outfit for prom, from the prom dress,
to the jewelry. Browse our Shopping
Directory to find all the things you need for your outfit.
Your Prom dress - See our section about what dress
features best suits your body type here.
Get the dress tailored to your size once you have bought it,
a few weeks before prom. Make sure it fits properly around
the chest, waist and hips and is the right length. The last
thing you want to worry about at prom is if your dress will
split if you move. Now, once you have picked out a dress and
had it tailored, whatever the style, then you can work around
it and your natural looks, to match up your hair, jewelry
and make-up to create the best overall outfit. Here are our
tips:
Hair - What Hairstyle to choose? Well, this largely
depends on your choice of dress, and what hair type you are.
But in general, the following go well together, and you can
experiment with:
- Strappy open-top, and low neckline dress. Both up-do's and
down-do's look good with these dress cuts. If you want to
show off your shoulders with your dress then go for a fancy
up-do, else half up, half-down, sleek down, and curled down,
will all look good on you.
- V-neck and deep neckline dresses look better with hair down,
or half-up half-down. Try a hair-do that allows your hair
to come down and rest on your shoulders. Slight curls, or
wavy strands down the side of your face and neck look especially
good.
- Puffy or decorated tops, or with sleeves. Dresses that cover
your shoulders and/or have detail around the top look best
with up-do's so the hair is not taking attention away from
the dress. You can try tight and elegant like the French twist,
or more 'straight out of bed' up-do's. Curly hair tied back
with curls hanging looks great too.
Shoes - Now the most important rule when looking for
shoes is to remember that you are going to be wearing them
for several hours and so they need to be comfortable. If you
aren't used to wearing heels, then don't go for huge heels
which will kill your feet whenever you are standing. Whatever
shoes you choose, be sure to wear them around the house to
make sure they fit properly and don't hurt, and to break them
in. So, our tips:
- Choose shoes that go with your dress and compliment it.
Pick a similar color, and the same kind of style as your dress.
Don't go to overboard with detailed shoes, simple is elegant.
Again, remember you need shoes that you will be ok walking
and dancing in.
- For strappy dresses with a dress cut to show your legs,
go for strappy shoes. No detail as that will attract attention
to your feet, but straps wrapping up and around your legs
slightly, or fancy heels are good.
- For dresses with fuller skirts or which go lower down, you
can wear slightly more chunky shoes, flat soled shoes are
ok too.
Jewelry - For prom night you want to look elegant.
So wear jewelry that isn't too chunky, and keep it to a minimum
to let yourself shine. One necklace, earrings, a bracelet
and possibly simple elegant rings for example.
- For low cut, strappy dresses, both short and medium length
necklaces look good, don't choose one too heavy though or
it may spoil the delicate look of the dress. Dangly, fancy
earrings look good with this style too, and thin fancy bracelets
too.
- For V-neck and deep necklines you can wear a slightly heavier
necklace that hangs down and compliments the cut. Wear medium
sized earrings, not too dangly to avoid cluttering your neck
area, and simple bracelets/rings.
- For dresses with covered or puffy shoulders, don't wear
dangly jewelry. A tighter simple necklace, and small, classic
earrings will look best. Bracelets and rings will compliment
your dress.
Gloves and scarves - Elegant gloves, scarves, or shawls
look good, but go best with simpler dresses which don't already
have detail. Especially good for sleeveless strappy, low cut,
and V-neck dresses to compliment the cut and add more to your
outfit. Not a good idea for dresses with padded shoulders
and long sleeves.
Make-up (cosmetics) - There are lots of places that
will teach you all you need to know about make-up, so here
we just want to mention the most important things and basic
rules you want to remember to look gorgeous for prom:
- Keep it simple. You are going for dinner and dancing not
a night club.
- Apply a basic foundation and/or powder that matches your
skin color, to even out blemishes, and control shine.
- Apply blusher to your cheeks, but not too much! Just a hint
to give you a nice rosy look. Apply to your cheek bone from
it's middle, outward.
- Eyes: Use a simple eye liner to outline and accentuate your
eyes, focus mainly on above the eye. Then apply a fairly natural
shade of eyeshadow, or one that compliments your dress but
don't spread it more than on your eyelids or it will take
too much attention from the rest of your face. Use a plain
dark mascara to give your lashes volume and finish off the
look, this is important as your eyes will look bare without
it.
- Lips: Use a shade of lip liner and lipstick which is close
to your natural lip color. Apply the lip liner around the
edges of your lips, being careful not to go over the contours,
then apply your natural shade lipstick, dab on a tissue, et
voila! Simple but stunning.
