Preparing yourself for prom: Mind

Prom is one special night of your life where you want to look your best, here we provide you with all the information you need to look drop dead gorgeous on the night, to make it a night you'll never forget. In this section we cover manners, because you cannot look your best unless you act your best. The most important thing to remember is to be polite and respectful at all times.

Etiquette - In other words: manners. To look your best on prom night you have to act your best, and this means knowing good table manners, and etiquette in general. Here we outline for you what is and isn't acceptable, at the dinner table, and throughout the night. Tips for the guys too!

At all times:
- Be polite
- Don't burp
- Don't fart
- Don't Swear
- Don't spit
- Don't sneeze or blow your nose in front of everyone
- Don't chew gum or sweets or anything else.
- Don't slouch: When sitting and standing
- Don't whisper or giggle
- If you must scratch yourself, do so discreetly
- Don't pat, slap, nudge, or poke others
- Don't laugh or talk loudly and obnoxiously
- Sit and stand straight, with posture. Move elegantly and slowly.
- Be polite and respectful to everyone, don't say anything offensive.
- Don't kiss your date in public
- Don't spend too long in the toilet or doing yourself up, it is rude to your date
- Don't mess around with your date in public (tickling, touching etc), just holding hands.
- Always include everyone present in the conversation. (Don't talk about private things, with just your friends).

At dinner (all the above apply too):
- Your knife and spoons go on your right, forks on your left. Start from the outside and work your way in.
- Your glass, water and any other liquids go on your right.
- Your bread plate and other side dishes go on your left.
- Don't slouch at or on the table
- Keep your elbows off the table
- Keep your belongings off the table too
- Don't start eating until everybody is seated, and possibly until after someone has proposed a toast.
- Don't slurp your soup
- Don't tilt your soup bowl to get the last bit
- Don't chew with your mouth open or speak with your mouth full
- Don't bend down over your food, raise your fork or spoon to your mouth
- Don't eat too fast, try and be elegant
- When taking a drink, always use your napkin first and drink small gulps
- Don't reach over to grab the salt or anything else, always ask politely
- When passing the salt, pass the pepper too, they are a pair
- Don't pick your teeth
- Don't take food from someone else's plate or your date's fork
- Don't play with your food
- Don't lick the utensils or plate, or play around with them

At Prom
- Save the first and last prom dance for your date
- Do be a good date, don't abandon your date to go and sit with your friends, or to dance with others all night
- Do accept compliments and any offers to dance, gracefully
- Do act civilized, don't lose your temper over anything, you don't want to be a prom drama queen

Tips for him:
- Ladies first. Guys, open doors for the lady and always let her into a room, and sit down first.
- Offer your arm to your date when you are walking.
- Don't forget to compliment your date when you pick her up. She has spent a lot of time preparing herself.
- Be very polite to everyone, especially your date. This is your chance to show you're a gentleman.
